Multiplayer is also back in a very familiar fashion, although there is some rebranding, with unranked races now labelled as ‘Social Play’ and neatly divided into Beginner and Experienced options. That’s not really a bad thing as there was very little wrong with it before, although some of the added interactions seen in Braking Point might be well used in future to give the Career just a little more personality and immersion amidst the repetition of race weekends.

It’s a solid and enjoyable addition to the game, with very lenient track limits and collisions letting you be far more aggressive than you would in other modes giving it an arcade-style edge, and it leaves itself very much open to a sequel next year. Each chapter is linked with additional email and social media snapshots, plus phone conversations with colleagues and loved ones to add to the narrative. Fail and you’ll have to restart the challenge, although there are three difficulties so rookies can start off on easy while they learn the tracks before moving up.

It’s essentially a sequence of 16 challenge events, most of which require you to catch and overtake a rival car or target position, although there are also a few full races (at 25% distance) to test yourself in. In terms of production values, it’s the one clear snapshot into what Codemasters really can do with the power of the new consoles, topping and tailing the action with some slick cutscenes – even if the drama is a little clichéd and can be rather annoying at times.
